Despite having no distinct origin, the term "Pookie" has been a part of American society for many years, frequently appearing in pop culture, cartoons, and films.  In the latter half of the 20th century, it gained popularity as a term of affection.  Garfield's teddy bear, "Pooky," was one prominent early usage that contributed to the term's widespread use.  People changed the name over time to convey warmth or cuteness, which resulted in the current, loving version, Pookie.
